Drabble Fest Promo
Crash Time!
corinn
Hey, there's a drabble fest for anime/manga/manhwa/manhua fandoms going on over on DW. Drop by and prompt or fill. If you don't have a DW account you should be able to post using your LJ or just anon. I've never done one of these before. It's fun. But people keep prompting for fandoms I know nothing about.

Accessibility in the Icon/Graphics Community
nyoron~!
corinn
So, I've been pretty out of the icon-making loop for nigh two and a half years now. Depression and blah, blah, blah. I actually got a lulzy kick in the pants over on Dreamwidth and made and posted some icons and had an interesting conversation that I thought some of my icon-making friends on LJ might be interested in. Who knows, maybe this has come up in discussion since I fell out of the loop and I just don't know about it.

So things happened on [community profile] capslock_dreamwidth to prompt an amazingly fun post called "CAPSLOCK U" where people asked questions and got answers from experts, only in lulzy capslock colloquial full of cursing. It was very educational and had some real gems. Someone said there should be icons and I felt the urge to make icons for the first time since June 2009. I ended up enjoying it. I'm going to try to fight off the apathy and do more.

So I was getting ready to post the icons as a separate post and decided to look at previous icon posts using the tags to see if there was a particular way the community favored. In the comments of one of the posts, someone commented thanking the icon maker for using alt tags. This combined mentally with how DW has a description line for icons and I thought, "Hey, I'll alt tag all the icons. It may take a bit, but it seems like people like it here." So I did.

On the icon post, I got a response about the alt tags that has me thinking I will alt all my graphics from now on.
not_a_sniglet: FUCK YES WE CAN ALWAYS USE MORE ICONS KTHX. WILL CREDIT. AND THANK YOU SO SO SO SO SO SO DAMN MUCH FOR ALT TEXT. I COULD GIVE YOU A CAKE. NO I'M SERIOUS I COULD... IF I HAD A CAKE. WOULD AN INTERNET HIGH-FIVE WORK INSTEAD?

corinn: I SAW THE ONLY PREVIOUS SET OF ICONS HERE AND SOMEONE SAID "FUCK YES ALT TEXT" SO I FIGURED IT WAS A GOOD THING. I NEVER DID IT FOR ICONS BEFORE. IS IT HELPFUL FOR SCREEN READER USERS OR SOMETHING? I AM UNFAMILIAR WITH SUCH THINGS. WHENEVER I BRING MY GRAPHICS COMM OVER FROM LJ I'LL HAVE TO ALT THE UNCRAPPY THINGS AHAHAHA. I'M RELIEVED I DIDN'T BORK THE ALT TAGS, I WAS LIKE 70% ASLEEP WHEN I WAS CODING THEM IN AND DOING PREVIEW EVERY THREE ENTRIES IN PARANOIA.

CAKE IS AWESOME, BUT INTERNET HIGH-FIVES ARE SUFFICIENT.

not_a_sniglet: YES. WITHOUT ALT TEXT PEOPLE WHO USE SCREEN READERS CAN'T GET THE ICONS, I MEAN CAN'T RIGHT CLICK AND DOWNLOAD THEM. NOR CAN THEY TELL WHERE THE PICTURE EVEN IS.

IF YOU CODE ALTS
ON "NONCRAPPY" STUFF (AS YOU PUT IT) I WILL COME LOOK. SEEING MORE PEOPLE DO THE ALTS MAKES ME A HAPPY HAPPY BUNNY.

OH LOOK. I FOUND INTERNET CAKE. HERE YOU GO. YOU ARE AWESOME.

corinn: I SHALL START TRAINING MYSELF TO ADD ALT TEXT TO ALL MY IMAGES, THEN. I THINK I MANAGED TO DO IT FOR THE GIFS I USED IN THE COMMENTS ON THIS POST...? FEELING A BIT FACEPALMY ABOUT NOT HAVING DONE IT BEFORE. I DIDN'T KNOW A DAMN THING ABOUT SCREEN READERS UNTIL LJ BLEW THEMSELVES UP IN DECEMBER AND THEY WERE DISCUSSED IN COMMENTS. MY SUM TOTAL KNOWLEDGE OF THEM IS NOW THAT THEY MAKE PEOPLE WITH SEEING PROBLEMS ABLE TO USE THE INTERNET, FLASH AND AJAX MAKE THEM CONFUSED (THOUGH IDK EXACTLY WHAT AJAX IS), AND ALT TEXT MAKES THINGS EASIER ON THEM.

ANY TIPS FOR MAKING GOOD/ACTUALLY USEFUL ALT TAGS?

SOME OF MY OLD ICONS ARE SO MEH-TO-CRAPPY THAT I THINK I JUST WON'T EXPOSE DW TO THEM, AHAHAHAHA.

MMMM INTERNET CAAAAKE. *NOMS ALL THE NOMS*

azurelunatic: [capslock colloquial explanation of AJAX and accessibility]
SADLY, A SHITTON OF WEBSITE DESIGN CLASSES WILL GO "YEAH, YOU NEED TO GO AHEAD AND MEET THESE STANDARDS, RITE" BUT THEN NOT EXPLAIN WHY, SO SLACKERS CAN GO "EH, THAT SHIT'S NOT NEEDED" OR EVEN WITH THE BEST INTENTIONS SOME PEOPLE HAVEN'T HEARD OF THE MYRIAD WAYS IN WHICH SHIT CAN BE INACCESSIBLE, BECAUSE THEY'RE STILL AT THE "WAIT, BLIND PEOPLE CAN USE A COMPUTER? BUT ... EYES? READING?" LEVEL, AND THEY'VE NEVER EVEN HEARD OF A SCREEN READER.

WHICH I HADN'T UNTIL DREAMWIDTH STARTED AND THE ACCESSIBILITY PEOPLE WERE SAYING "RIGHT, SO LET US TELL YOU ABOUT THE MANY WAYS IN WHICH OTHER WEBSITES SUCK AND SHOULD BE UPGRADED." AND LET ME TELL YOU THAT WAS AN EDUCATION.

DREAMWIDTH HAS THOSE SWEET FLY-DOWN MENUS, RIGHT? BUT IT SUCKS IF YOUR BROWSER DOESN'T TAKE A MOUSE, OR IF YOU CAN'T USE A MOUSE ON ACCOUNT OF GENERAL PHYSICAL FUCKERY. SO IF YOU JUST CLICK ON THE MENU HEADING INSTEAD OF HOVERING OVER IT AND THEN PICKING, YOU GET A LITTLE PAGE WITH THE WHOLE MENU CONTENTS IN THERE. THINGS LIKE THAT.

ONE OF THE TRICKS I USE WHEN TRANSCRIBING IMAGES IS TO LOOK AT IT AT LEAST TWICE. I WANT TO INCLUDE ELEMENTS BOTH OF WHAT THE IMAGE MEANS, WHAT INFORMATION YOU TAKE OUT OF THE IMAGE WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT, AND ALSO THE AESTHETIC PROPERTIES.

LIKE, THIS ICON, IF I JUST SAID "A HANDSOME MAN WITH SONG LYRICS" THAT'S LITERALLY WHAT'S ON THE ICON, BUT IT DOES NOT TELL YOU A DAMNED THING. IT HELPS IF I WRITE OUT THE SONG LYRICS, AND SAY WHO THE MAN IS. IDEALLY IT WOULD SAY THAT IT IS MULDER FROM THE X-FILES, WITH THE LYRICS "I CANNOT BE WITHOUT YOU" "ANOTHER HEART IS CRACKED IN TWO" "IF YOU WALK OUT ON ME I'M WALKING AFTER YOU" AND ALSO THAT HIS FACE IS HALF IN SHADOW AND IT'S ALL ~ARTSY AND MOODY. BECAUSE SCULLY JUST GOT BEE'D AND ABDUCTED.

IT IS AN ART FORM, AND IT GETS BETTER WITH PRACTICE!

I'll edit in any response not_a_sniglet or others give me.

I also looked at [community profile] accessibility_fail and saw the mentions of web sites using totally visual navigation with no alt tagging being inaccessible. Mind/privilege blown. It seems so obvious in retrospect. I thought I'd share with my icon-making friends because, wow, I had never thought about the subject before, and alt tagging could make your graphics accessible to more people.

I think instead of waiting and importing cherrymoonlight, I'll manually redo each post. I need to update links and edit in alt tags anyway. Whenever I get around to that.

For those wanting to know more about the recent DDoS attacks, yes, it looks like it was the Russian government trying to shut down the dissidents again.

As I said last time, while it's frustrating not to have access, LJ is a lot more than a social network platform. From the article:

"LiveJournal isn’t just a social network. It’s also a platform for organizing civic action. Dozens of network projects and groups mobilize people to solve specific problems — from defending the rights of political prisoners to saving endangered historic architecture in Moscow."

So while I know many are considering the move over to Dreamwidth and other such sites, supporting LJ is a way we can help support those who use it for more than a writing/roleplaying/social venue.

Also, as a FYI, LJ is giving paid users effected by the outage two weeks of paid time as compensation.

Flames Are TOTALLY Perfect Weed-Killers

Dear Neighbor,

FIRE IS NOT A TOOL FOR YARD WORK. ESPECIALLY ON A WINDY DAY. BE GLAD WE'RE NOT IN THE FOOTHILLS, WHERE YOU WOULD HAVE STARTED A WILDFIRE.

No Love,
Cor

You know how sometimes you get those grassy weeds in the center of your driveway or between panels of sidewalk? The quickest way to get rid of them is to scrape with a shovel. The crazy neighbor-- we call him Creepydude because he's fond of wandering outside in nothing but a poorly-wrapped maroon bedsheet that sometimes teases you with the possible necessity to bleach your eyes out-- and his son(?) were doing yard work. Mum was cutting the grass. She saw them sloppily pour gas on the weeds. That's... not quite safe by a house, but the local schools use diesel to kill grass to make lasting lines on soccer fields, so she accepted that as their MacGuyvered version of RoundUp and turned away. Shortly thereafter, she heard yelling. They set the weeds on fire, and one of the idiots was pouring gasoline onto the flames. Then the flames went up the stream of pouring gasoline and into the can, and he threw the flaming can at the cable box. She watched in horror as they beat it out using a broom.

No, seriously. SERIOUSLY.

I swear, this neighborhood attracts the crazies. It's been a year or two since someone set a tree on fire, though, so I guess we were due for a mishap with fire.

Princess Tutu [][][] Episode 4 Screen Caps
corinn
Well, I finally finished another episode! 747 caps plus 25 assembled pans. There are some really lovely pans in this episode; I love the ones of "Giselle" in particular. Additionally, you get six large vector traces I made from ghosted-over pans on top of other caps. Have fun with them.

A NOTE: ANY AND ALL TRANSFORMATION SEQUENCES WILL HAVE THEIR OWN DOWNLOADS. So Ahiru/Duck's transformation into Princess Tutu IS NOT included in this download. I count it as stock footage, and don't see a reason to cap it repeatedly.

The .zip is 222 MB and includes 747 screen captures at 711 x 480 resolution, 25 assembled pans of odd sizes, and six large vector traces.

[ download .zip on SendSpace ]

[ download all at Box.net 1 and Box.net 2 ]

Have fun with these caps! Comments and credits would be nice, though not entirely necessary. Just don't claim these as your own work, and I'll be happy.
